Junior Group Lessons

The junior program is segregated via a very simple system of age and level. Players can be placed into one of three, basic categories of beginner, intermediate, and advanced. If your child is new to the program or if you have any difficulty in choosing the class you feel would be appropriate, please give us a call and we will schedule a free evaluation. Classes contain between 3-5 players (up to six if there is more than one court) and cover all areas of instruction: stroke production, point play, positioning, etc. We strongly suggest registering early in order get the time and day you would like for your child’s class.

If you have concerns about your child being placed with children who are much younger as is sometimes the case in other programs, rest assured that there is generally little variance in age range. If ages of players in the classes vary by more than 18 months but we feel the levels are consistent, then we will check with parents to ensure that both they and their children are aware of this.

We strongly recommend that if you are looking at enrolling your child into ANY tennis program, that you review our MLTC Junior Tennis Guidebook which will help answer many of your questions about choosing a program that is right for your child.

If you are looking for a schedule of classes, you’ll find it here.

10 & Under Tennis

The MLTC utilizes the “10 & Under” system of teaching kids that has been adopted by the United States Tennis Association as well as the International Tennis Federation. The system involves using lower compression balls (red, orange and green), a smaller court and smaller racquets. This approach allows younger players to improve much faster and to start playing tennis much sooner than they would with a regular ball (a.k.a. “yellow ball”). Think of it as being similar to T-Ball relative to baseball.

QuickStart

Starting the youngest players on a smaller court with appropriate equipment is a key to giving them early success.

QuickStart (QS) tennis is a fantastic way for your child to get introduced to the game of tennis at a low cost. QS classes can have a higher student/teacher ratio (up to 8:1), but players are taught the basics of the sport and quickly learn to control the ball in a small space. The cost is about 40% less than a typical class, so parents can have their kids give tennis a try without making a large investment. We will even supply the racquet!

Clinics

Tennis “clinics” are just another word for a tennis class or group lesson and they come in two options: open & closed. 98% of parents elect to enroll their kids in open classes. The size of an open class is 3-5 players. Parents who opt for a closed class do so with a group of friends or siblings, and they do not want additional players added to the group. The rate is higher for closed groups, and details can be viewed by reading the italicized print shown here. If you are looking for the once-per-week, group lesson for your child, then a clinic is the best way to go.

Junior Training Program

Our Junior Training Program (JTP) is for players who would like to make a bigger commitment to improving their tennis game.

Commitment to the JTP is from September through mid-June and consists of a clinic and match play each week. Players are comprehensively trained to ensure consistent and steady improvement. Entry into the JTP is contingent upon approval.

If you are considering enrolling your player into the JTP or the MLTC Masters program (see below), you may want to read about the history of the program by clicking here.

Requirements and details of the JTP are as follows:

  • Players must be granted approval in order to join the JTP.
  • Players must be a member at the MLTC East facility.
  • Although match-play programs are open to all players, JTP clinics are designed for JTP/Masters or approved players, as we foster a more serious brand of tennis with these players.
  • Orange ball classes at this level are for 1.5 hours.  Green ball classes are for 2 hours. Yellow ball classes are for 2.5 hours which includes 25-35 minutes of fitness training with a personal trainer.   Click here to see the JTP/Masters class schedule.
  • A great example of keeping the eyes down while doing drills in an MLTC class.

Match play sessions occur on weekends through our Junior Challenger Series League. Click here to learn more about the league and see the schedule.

  • Middle school and high school yellow ball players will be credited for the spring tennis season if tennis team tryouts or their tennis team schedule conflicts with MLTC’s JTP schedule.
  • The annual deadline for enrollment is September 1. After that date, players will not be admitted until the following September. The exception is a player who is new to the MLTC and was not aware of the program previously.
  • Cost of the program reflects a 5% discount of regular session fees for clinic, match play, and conditioning class. For those who stay in the program continuously without interruption through the entirety of high school 10% of the JTP program fees will be set aside and refunded to the player after completing and graduating from high school.  This is not retroactive and begins with the 2022-2023 program year.
  • The commitment is from September through mid-June.  Payment is made in two installments.  Other arrangements can be made if necessary.
  • Parents may choose to prorate up to two weeks of classes between September and January 1 (i.e., during Fall Sessions I and II), and between January and mid June (i.e., during Winter and Spring Sessions). In other words, you have the option to prorate up to two match days, two clinics, and two conditioning classes before the beginning of each period (Fall and Winter/Spring). We must know these dates BEFORE the beginning of each period so that invoices can be calculated.
  • Because of the discounted rate as well as the ability to prorate out classes, make-ups are NOT granted for missed classes.

Contact our Junior Programmer, Renee Giordano, if you are interested in acquiring approval to register your player in the JTP program. She can be reached by phone at 978 264 8349 (ext. 6) or by emailing renee.giordano@marcuslewisenterprises.com.

MLTC Masters

The Masters program is only for the most motivated junior players who have a genuine desire to see how far they can go with their tennis game. Players must go through a formal interview with Marcus Lewis before being accepted into the program. If your child likes tennis, then this is not the program for them. If they love it, then they have passed one step for entry into the group.

Masters players make a similar commitment as the JTP players described in the above section (one clinic and one match-play session each week).  Additionally, Masters juniors are required to have a private lesson each week and to practice their serves at least once each week.

Further details of the Masters program are as follows:

  • Entry into the Masters program requires a personal interview with Marcus Lewis.
  • Candidates must have won at least two USTA tournaments within six months of their interview.  For players who are 13 years or older, one of the tournaments must be a Level 5 or stronger event.
  • Beginning fall 2023, all Masters players should have a minimum UTR number of:*
    • Boy 13 – 4.0     Girl 13 – 3.0
    • Boy 14 – 5.0     Girl 14 – 4.0
    • Boy 15 – 6.0     Girl 15 – 5.0
    • Boy 16+ 7.0     Girl 16+ 6.0
    • *Exceptions to the above schedule due to illness, injury, etc. are case by case.
  • Players must be a member at the MLTC East facility.
  • The MLTC’s Marti Sarquella competing at the Nationals in Mobile, Alabama. When this photo was taken, Marti had just won the sectionals, cementing his position as the #1 player in New England in the boys 12 & under division.

Although match-play programs are open to all players, Masters juniors are trained in their clinics with other JTP/Masters and approved players only.

  • Orange ball classes at this level are for 1.5 hours.  Green ball classes are for 2 hours.  Yellow ball classes are for 2.5 hours which includes 25-35 minutes of fitness training with a personal trainer.
  • Yellow ball players will be prorated for the high school season if try-outs for their team schedule conflict with the JTP/Masters schedule.
  • The requisites outlined above are what is minimally necessary for players to develop their talents for high-level competition. Two optional “Add-ons” for players looking for additional training are either the Hit with the Pro or our Matchmaker program. These can be scheduled as part of the player’s weekly regimen.
  • Parents have until September 1st to enroll their children into the Masters program.  After that date, juniors will not be admitted until the following fall.  The exception is a child who is new to the MLTC program and was not aware of the Masters program previously.
  • The entire package is discounted by 5%.  For those who stay in the program continuously without interruption through the entirety of high school 10% of the program fees  will be set aside and refunded to the player after completing and graduating from high school.  This is not retroactive and begins with the 2022-2023 program year.
  • The commitment is from September through mid-June (i.e. ten months).  Payment is made in two installments.  Other arrangements can be made if necessary.
  • Parents may choose to prorate out up to two weeks’ of classes between September and January first.  They may choose to do the same for the period between January and mid-June.  In other words, parents can prorate out up to two match days and two clinics in order to allow for potential scheduling conflicts.  We must know these dates BEFORE the start of the session.
  • Because of the discounted rate as well as the ability to prorate out classes, make-ups are NOT allowed.
  • MLTC Masters may not prorate the weekly private lesson. It can be rescheduled as long as MLTC’s lesson cancelation policy is followed.

Additional benefits include:

  • Each Masters player receives a special t-shirt each fall that must be worn at all instructional programs.
  • Masters players receive a match shirt each year.  The shirt MUST be worn at all match competitions both in and out of the Marcus Lewis Tennis Center, except for high school team matches.
  • Players receive an impressive full-body warm-up suit upon being accepted into the program.  The warm-up MUST be worn at all match competitions both in and out of the Marcus Lewis Tennis Center, except for high school team matches.
  • Players must consistently display the MLTC logo on their racquet strings.
  • Strokes are videotaped twice a year for analysis.
  • Players are provided with a basic subscription to our exclusive PlayViewTennis system so that they can video their practice and match play sessions.
  • Two, 30-minute slots are allotted to book courts specifically to practice their serves.  They MUST do this at least once a week.
  • By age 12, players are candidates for the Mental Toughness 101 course at no charge.
  • Unlimited use of the club ball machine is included.
  • Players are allowed access to the club ball carts.
  • Their annual USTA fee is paid for by the MLTC.
  • Tournament fees are paid for by the MLTC.
  • Parents of Masters players are allowed to play with them and are not required to have a membership to do so.
  • Equipment benefits include:
    • After completing one full session (Sept-June) and registering for the upcoming fall, players are given a racquet of their choosing (up to $150).
    • After completing their second consecutive session and registering for the upcoming fall, players are given a racquet bag (up to $75).
    • After completing their third consecutive session and registering for the upcoming fall, players are given a second racquet.
    • After completing their fifth consecutive session and registering for the upcoming fall, players are given a third racquet or a pair of shoes or a new bag…their choice (up to $150 to spend).
    • Every two years thereafter until they graduate from high school and after registering for the upcoming fall, players will have their choice of a racquet, pair of shoes or a new bag (up to $150 to spend).
  • ABOVE BENEFITS MUST BE USED IN THE YEAR THAT THEY ARE AVAILABLE.  THEY ARE NOT RETROACTIVE.

It’s obvious to see why off-court strength training can be a big advantage for advanced players.

Understand that this type of attention and sponsorship is only seen at the national level or at some of the most prestigious boarding tennis academies in the country; not at private tennis clubs. Also understand that this program is ONLY for players who have a deep passion for the game and an understanding of commitment.

If you are considering setting up an interview for the MLTC Masters Program, we advise you to read the history of how this program came to be developed here.
